About Us
The Day Trippers bike touring operation was started by Miles Johnson here in Tauranga in 2018, who after after spending 30 years pursuing a career in mechanical engineering he decided it was time to follow his passion for cycling and work hard at not working. Miles said that if your work is your passion, you will never work a day in your life – every day will be your playground!
Unfortunately with the events of 2020, the COVID pandemic changed the toursim landscape significantly and with no cruise ships visiting Tauranga for the foreseeable future, Miles decided to return to his career as a mechanical engineer and close down the Day Trippers operation.
When the owner of another local tourism company ( Mount Classic Tours ) Ian Holroyd, learnt of this he felt that after all the hard work that Miles had put in to creating the business, this was a service that should not dissapear, so a deal was done and at the end of January 2021 the business was re-established as part of the Mount Classic Tours operation, which has been operating here in Tauranga since 2001.
Sadly the e-bikes that were part of the service had been sold in 2020 [e-bikes being in short supply during the lockdown they were easily sold] so for now we will need you to bring your own bikes along, though we are looking into setting up a bike hire option soon though.
DayTrippers was founded on a passion for riding bikes and our desire to show our locals and overseas visitors the beautiful Bay of Plenty region and this will continue under our ownership, as this is what Mount Classics have been doing for over 20 years (but not on bikes).
We will continue to provide half and full day cycling trips to explore amazing scenery of our region, eat delicious local produce, have fun and maybe even build new friendships. We will also offer Bike tours throughout New Zealand for locals who want to explore further afield.
DayTrippers offer you set cycle tours or a customised itinerary to suit your preferences or availability. All our rides use grade 1-2 trails with a focus on amazing local scenery. We hope to again offer tour options specifically designed for cruise ship passengers arriving into Port of Tauranga - perfect for those looking for an active adventure in our beautiful Bay of Plenty.
For the free spirited rider we can provide Trail Shuttle transfer options to get you to your cycle destination in style. Explore the local Tauranga City cycle trails or perhaps pedal a little further along the Omokoroa Coastal Trail using our shuttle to get you there or back.
Our company owner Ian is a keen cyclist himself who hopes to ride along on some of the trips. We have many cycling enthusiasts among our great team of drivers/guides, who as born & bred New Zealanders, we endeavour to provide an authentic Kiwi experience when you spend a day of adventure with us.
We love riding bikes but more we love the joy it brings you guys as our guests. We always see happy faces and that is why we do it!
